Erwin Bechtold starts his study of visual arts at the Kölner Werkschule. After a few years he realizes that he cannot use his creative possibilities properly and he leaves for Paris. There he deals with Fernand Léger. In the mid-1950s, the two artists left together for Barcelona. Bechtold likes this city and its culture so much that he decides to stay in Spain. He soon came into contact with Catalan avant-garde art and joined the Dau artist group. From that moment on he was increasingly asked for exhibitions, including in Barcelona, Madrid and Ibiza. But he is also regularly asked for exhibitions in his native country, including Berlin and Mannheim.
Until 1963 Bechtold's paintings were characterized by biological forms. From around the mid-1960s, however, more and more geometric elements reappear in his works.
