Richard Artschwager
Washington, United States (1923-2013)
Richard Artschwager carved out a truly unique space in the art world, turning everyday objects into something strangely unfamiliar. After studying at Cornell University and training under abstraction pioneer Amédée Ozenfant, he started out as a cabinetmaker in the 1950s, creating simple furniture. A workshop fire led him to shift toward sculpture, using leftover industrial materials, and later expanded into painting, drawing, and photography.

Artschwager's work is often labeled as Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art, but he never really fit into any single category. He blurred the lines between furniture, sculpture, and image, playing with how we perceive the world around us. A simple sheet of Formica could be both an object and a representation of wood. His pieces challenge what we think is real, exploring the overlap between images and the physical world we live in.

Artschwager’s work has been featured in major solo exhibitions worldwide, including at the Whitney Museum in New York, the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami.
