Conrad Schultz
Elblag, Poland, 1940-2001
Schulz studied sculpture at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg under Gustav Seitz from 1961 to 1966 and then in 1966/67 at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1968 he was one of the founders of the CO-OP artists' cooperative Hamburg. From 1968 to 1973 Konrad Schulz was a lecturer at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. In 1970 he was one of the co-founders of the Tandem project group. From 1972 he worked as a freelance artist in Hamburg and in 1985 Schulz received the "Altona Art Prize".

Schulz created large objects and sculptures from different materials. He acquired international fame in the 1970s with his 'tyre objects' ('Geländecouch'), which he later picked up and quoted thematically, for example in the 'bicycle objects' from the 1990s. From 1980, painting gained importance in his work. There were paintings, gouaches, collages, charcoal and chalk drawings, screen prints and woodcuts. His work always remained attached to the representation, but was characterized by a spontaneous and expressive brushwork. All his works, both sculptural and painterly, have a humorous conception and effect.
