Stefan Wewerka

Stefan Wewerka is also called the ' Gifted deformer of the ordinary'. He is an exceptionally versatile artist who is involved in visual art and design. Stefan Wewerka, the son of sculptor Rudolf Wewerka (1889–1954), was born into a family with a strong artistic tradition spanning several generations. After World War II he studied architecture with Max Taut, Eduard Ludwig and Georg Leowald at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin. After graduating, he worked for various architects, including Hans Scharoun. In the late fifties, Wewerka started working as a freelance artist. In the 1960s he started cutting up and reassembling everyday objects - mainly chairs, but also coins, cutlery, flags, plates and so on. In the 1970s, the focus of his practice shifted to etching, resulting in numerous portfolios and individual works. During this period he befriended and worked closely with Dieter Roth. In 1978, Wewerka started designing individual pieces of furniture for TECTA. Wewerka's most important works for TECTA are his chair sculptures - an incomparable mix of art and design.
