Schmettau studied sculpture at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin from 1956 to 1960. In 1961 he graduated as Meisterschüler with the sculptor Ludwig Gabriel Schrieber. In 1969, Schmettau participated with, among others, Louise Bourgeois and Jean-Robert Ipoustéguy in the Biennale Internazionale di Scultura di Carrara in Carrara. In the same year he stayed in Florence with the Villa-Romana-Preis and during 1970/71 he lived and worked with the Villa-Massimo-Preis in Rome. In 1972 he co-founded the Aspekt group, the artists of the Berlin Critics and Realists. In 1977 he was awarded the Berliner Kunstpreis in the visual arts department by the Akademie der Künste.

From 1971 until his retirement in 2002, Schmettau was professor of sculpture at the Universität der Künste Berlin. On the occasion of his seventieth birthday, the Kunst Stiftung Poll organized an exhibition of recent work by Schmettau in 2007: Skulpturen und Architekturmodelle. The artist has lived and worked in Berlin since 1945. He has been a member of the Deutsche Künstlerbund since 1967.
