Lienhard von Monkiewitsch
Germany, 1941
Lienhard von Monkiewitsch studied Art in Braunschweig from 1964 to 1967 at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HBK) and from 1967 to 1969 Painting & Graphics with Alfred Winter-Rust. From 1985 he worked in Los Angeles and had exhibitions in New York , Los Angeles, Boston and London and Tokyo. Lienhard von Monkiewitsch deals with the representation of space in his photographs. He became known in the late 1960s and early 1970s for his room illusionistic works that only show empty tiled floors. The viewer was challenged to finish the missing walls and fill the rooms with their own imagination. If Monkiewitsch still used perspective here, he later succeeded in describing the space (since 1984) with deep, matt, absorbing colors that led to a black that on the one hand seems to press in front of the canvas as a result of the special type of pigment application suggests on the other hand also the depth of infinite space. He is a representative of Concrete Art.
