Graves' interest in art, nature and anthropology was sparked by her father, an accountant at a local museum. After graduating in 1964, she received a Fulbright Scholarship and studied painting in Paris. A prolific artist who worked in painting, sculpture, printmaking, and film, Graves first made her presence felt on the New York art scene in the late 1960s and 1970s, with life-size camel sculptures that appeared as accurate as a natural history display. Her works are included in many public collections, including those of the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Gallery of Australia (Canberra), the Des Moines Art Center, Walker Art Center. When Graves was only 29, she was given a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. She was then the youngest artist and fifth woman to achieve this honor.
This signed, dated and numbered print was based on Nancy Graves' 1971 drawing, "Photographs of a Jumping Frog at 1/40 Second", influenced by Eadweard Muybridge's motion photography, which shows the sequential movement of a jumping frog. The original drawing was exhibited at Mitchell Innes & Nash Gallery in 2014.
